What is a Vancouver BC property assessment?

We’re glad you asked! You’ve come to the right place! A BC property assessment is the determination of a property’s value as of July 1st of each year. It’s important to keep in mind that this information is based on the tax collector’s data and information and that the true market value of a home at any given time could either be higher or lower than this assessment based on market conditions. Most of the time the home’s value will be higher as the real estate market tends to slowly go up over time but cyclical drops can and do happen periodically. This information is still very good information to have if you find yourself in the market for either buying or selling a home in the Vancouver, BC area.

Is it possible to find the value of my home or property online?

Websites like Zillow or Trulia can be used to find the value of a property in Vancouver, BC but this is not the same thing as a property assessment from the tax collector’s office.  In order to find that, go to the BC assessment page on the Province of British Columbia’s website.

Should you pay more for a house than the BC property assessment?

The assessed value of a home or property as reported by BC property assessment is usually lower than the fair market value of the home or property. This is because the BC property assessment data is lagging. In other words, it’s data from months back and reflects what it was worth months ago. It can still help you determine what you may pay in property taxes each year.
